6 and 12 String Guitar $11.98 Leo Kottke’s wide-release debut came about after he sent a cassette to John Fahey’s Takoma label. Not surprisingly, it recalls Fahey’s work in a number of respects: the synthesis of numerous influences from blues, pop, classical, and folk styles, the weirdly titled instrumentals, even the tongue-in-cheek liner notes. Kottke’s brand of virtuosity, however, is more soothing and easy on the ear than Fahey’s. It’s far from sappy, though, the rich and resonant picking intimating some underlying restlessness, like peaceful open fields after a storm. Establishing much of the territory Kottke was to explore throughout his career, this release was also one of his most popular, eventually selling over 500,000 copies. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Leo Kottke – Guitar |

12 $11.98 For 12, his twelfth album, Keller Williams has assembled a compilation by selecting one track each from his previous 11 albums (that would be Freek [1994], Buzz [1996], Spun [1998], Breathe [1999], Loop [2001], Laugh [2002], Dance [2003], Home [2003], Stage [2004], Grass [2006; credited to Keller & the Keels], and Dream [2007]), plus one new song, “Freshies.” Those who have heard all of those discs might have picked differently; Williams has never had anything resembling a hit, and was free to create a collection as he saw fit. He neither attempted to pick his “best” songs, whatever those would have been, nor even to find representative ones, which might have been even more difficult, given his eclectic nature. Rather, he seems to have aimed at musical cohesion, such that 12, despite some of his usual veering from style to style, hangs together as a whole. To the extent that it makes a statement about who Williams is as a musician, it suggests that he is a lover of riffs, especially ones developed on the bass guitar, and that he tends to build his compositions out of those riffs, adding other tasty elements along the way. Among those elements are lyrics, which seem to be written more with a sense of how they sound than what they mean. (How else could one come up with tracks called “Freeker by the Speaker” and “Butt Sweat”?) Occasionally, though, Williams is moved to express his philosophy of life in the words of new-age self-actualization, as when he chants the greeting-card lines “Work like you don’t need the money, love like you’ve never been hurt, dance like nobody is watching” during “More Than a Little.” But what really matters to him is the groove; repeatedly, he uses the word “funky,” and that’s what he wants to be, not a surprising aspiration for a one-man band who spends most of his time trying to warm up audiences who came to see somebody else. To succeed, such a performer needs ear-catching material, and the selections on 12, like much of Williams’ repertoire, are catchy and engaging, if rarely compelling. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Jamie Janover – Dulcimer (Hammer); Ty Burhoe – Tabla; Béla Fleck – Banjo; Bill Nershi – Slide Guitar; Craig Dougald – Marimba; Keller Williams – Guitar (10 String), Djembe, Shaker, Voices, Guitar (Bass), Guitar (12 String), Piano (Electric), Guitar, Bass, Vocals; Barbara Nesbit – Vocals; |

Quantum Guitar $14.39 Steve Howe’s solo albums seem to hold a wide variety of music within. Generally, this disc presents the listener with acoustic guitar solos, progressive rock compositions, country-tinged songs, and more. Historically, the more complex music of Yes has consisted of smaller pieces brought in by the individual members and assembled almost piecemeal into complex song structures. An interesting aspect of Howe albums is the opportunity to hear works that could easily have been such segments and get a glimpse into where the band could have gone. This album is true to that format. Steve Howe performs nearly completely solo on this release, accompanied only on percussion by his son Dylan Howe. When looking over the liner notes on this one, be sure to check out the list of guitars used on the album. For guitar heads, that is always a welcome portion of any Howe solo album. ~ Gary Hill, Rovi Performers: Dylan Howe – Drums; Steve Howe – Multi Instruments, Mandolin, Pedal Steel, Percussion, Guitar (Electric), Keyboards, Guitar (12 String), Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic), Bass |

Booker’s Guitar $14.38 The genesis of this deeply moving album was in an almost chance encounter at a London hotel, where Eric Bibb had just played a set. He was approached by a fan with a beat-up guitar case, which turned out to contain a 1930s National steel guitar that had been owned and played by legendary Delta blues legend Bukka White. Bibb was inspired to write a half-spoken, half-sung ode to White, which he then recorded in London using that guitar; the remainder of the album, though inspired by that experience, was recorded in the U.S. on his own instruments and finds Bibb approaching the Delta blues tradition from a variety of highly personal angles. There’s the gospel-inflected blues of “With My Maker I Am One” (which features harmonica player Grant Dermody, and which you won’t realize is inspired by Deepak Chopra unless you read the notes), the possibly (but not necessarily) Katrina-inspired “Flood Water,” a wonderful version of the traditional “Wayfaring Stranger,” and an equally spectacular rendition of the Blind Willie Johnson classic “Nobody’s Fault But Mine.” One of the album’s best and most affecting tracks is an all-too-brief guitar instrumental, a deceptively simple-sounding and decidedly not blues-based piece; another is the gently beautiful “Rocking Chair,” which evokes ’50s doo wop as much as it does the Delta blues. The overall impression given by Booker’s Guitar is that of a richly varied but deeply rooted tribute not just to a particular man, but also to the great tradition he exemplified and the wide variety of musical streams that flowed into it. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Eric Bibb – 9-String Guitar, National Steel Guitar, Guitar (Baritone), Guitar (12 String), Guitar, Vocals; Grant Dermody – Chromatic Harmonica, Harmonica |

Guitar Noir $39.19 Steve Hackett’s later material is somewhat different from his ’70s and ’80s work, in that the guitar playing tends to be less progressive and lengthy, verging more on rock-blues and basic string arrangements. The emergence into this style is showcased on Guitar Noir, as Hackett displays a more mature side to his instrumental prowess. Each song is given one line of interpretation from Hackett in the liner notes, as the songs range from the life of a prostitute to the onslaught of television in the household. Only two of the 12 songs are without vocals, but words have no affect on Hackett’s beautiful passages anyway. Hackett even plays harmonica on “Lost in Your Eyes” and “Vampyre With a Healthy Appetite,” a tune about stolen pints of blood from a New Orlean’s hospital. As a guitar player first and foremost, the stories behind each song tend to get lost in the instruments, which also include light keyboards, but this doesn’t hinder the atmosphere of any of them. Hackett makes the guitar sound somber when it has to be, or tranquil and alluring, so every tune casts it’s own shadow of mood and feel. His intricacies are somewhat missed from past progressive albums, but he doesn’t have to play extended solos to be fully appreciated. ~ Mike DeGagne, Rovi Performers: Steve Hackett – Vocals, Guitar |
